The city of Columbus, Georgia is approximately 100 miles southwest of Atlanta. It is currently the third largest city in Georgia. Columbus boasts several attractions including the Springer Opera House built in 1871, Columbus State University, the National Infantry Museum and various sporting arenas. Columbus is also home to the Superior and State Courts of Muscogee County where criminal and civil state cases are handled. In criminal cases, the District Attorney's Office prosecutes felony cases in superior court while the Office of the Solicitor General handles misdemeanors in state court. Also located in Columbus is a federal courthouse for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia. In federal criminal matters, the U.S. Attorney's Office is charged with prosecuting all cases. Although the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Georgia is based in Macon, they maintain a staffed office in Columbus with several local AUSA's assigned to that division.
