Athens is also home to the State and Superior Courts of Athens-Clarke County which are compromised of six judges. Felony crimes are prosecuted by the District Attorney's Office in superior court while misdemeanor crimes are handled by the Office of the Solicitor General in state court. Athens is also the site for one of the courthouses of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, where federal criminal cases and civil disputes are tried.
