In one recent Southwest Georgia criminal case, our trial lawyers convinced state prosecutors to dismiss false child molestation charges against our client. We hired an investigator to uncover significant information about the complainant and presented that information to the DA's office prior to trial. The client was facing 20 years in prison, but the case was dismissed. We have also successfully resolved other serious criminal charges in the Albany area, and have helped injured victims recover substantial damages.
Albany is the center of our practice in Southwest Georgia. The city was founded in 1836 by Nelson Tift and named after New York's capital. The city sits at the head of the Flint River and has endured a long history of flooding and displacement. Today, the city boasts a population of nearly 77,000 people making it the ninth largest in Georgia. Perhaps the most notable Albanian was singer and pianist Ray Charles who was born there. Over the past thirty years, Albany has grown extensively employing most of its residents in health care, manufacturing and education. The city is also home to a nearby Marine Corps base which primarily repairs combat equipment. We have represented some Marines and former Marines from that base in several different types of cases.
The Superior Court of Dougherty County is located in Albany and handles state criminal allegations and civil suits. The court is currently comprised of three judges. Albany also has a federal courthouse and a division office for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia where federal cases in that district are resolved. The U.S. Attorney for the Middle District is responsible for the prosecution of all federal criminal cases and also has an office in the Albany federal courthouse.
